Henry Blooms Tri-Magnesium Citrate 900mg capsules

Henry Blooms Tri-Magnesium Citrate 900 mg

Magnesium is the one I raise most often in the clinic. It regulates muscle contraction, and low levels are a common cause of cramping and fatigue. More on why it matters.

Henry Blooms is an Australian-owned company that has been making supplements for over 75 years. This is a citrate form, which is well tolerated, in a vegan capsule.

Active ingredient

Each capsule contains magnesium citrate 900 mg, equivalent to elemental magnesium 139.05 mg.
No added sulfites, wheat, gluten, yeast, animal products, milk derivatives, eggs, soy, lactose, sugars, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

What it is for

  • Helps relieve muscle cramps and mild muscle spasms when dietary magnesium intake is inadequate
  • Supports normal muscle and nerve function
  • Supports bone health by helping regulate calcium absorption
  • The label also covers relief of mild migraine symptoms and PMS symptoms

Directions

Adults: one capsule two to three times daily with meals, or as directed by your health professional. Children under 18: only as professionally prescribed. Store below 25 °C, away from heat and direct sunlight, and protect from humidity.

Important — read before using

  • Mineral supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
  • Magnesium can have a laxative effect at higher doses. Start at the lower end.
  • If you have reduced kidney function, or take prescribed medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — magnesium interacts with several common medicines.
  • If symptoms persist, change or worsen, talk to your health professional. If fluid retention persists, seek medical advice.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if the tamper-evident seal is missing or broken.
  • Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Henry Blooms Super Kelp 75 vege capsules

Henry Blooms Super Kelp 75 vege capsules

$25.50 incl. GST

A source of natural iodine from kelp. Iodine supports healthy thyroid function, and the thyroid sets the body's metabolic rate — which is why low iodine tends to show up as tiredness and flatness rather than anything specific. Iodine deficiency is reasonably common in Australia.

Active ingredients

Each capsule contains Fucus vesiculosus (kelp) whole plant extract dry conc. 120 mg, equivalent to dry whole plant 600 mg, standardised to 100 micrograms iodine; and Ascophyllum nodosum (yellow wrack) whole plant dry powder 150 mg, standardised to 150 micrograms iodine. Total iodine 250 micrograms per capsule.
No added wheat, gluten, yeast, milk derivatives, eggs, soy, lactose, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Directions

Adults: one capsule daily with food, or as directed by your health professional. Do not exceed one capsule a day.

Important — read before using

  • Contains residual crustacea and fish products. Do not take it if you are allergic to shellfish or fish.
  • If you have a thyroid condition, or take thyroid medication, speak to your doctor first. Extra iodine can worsen both an underactive and an overactive thyroid.
  • One capsule provides 250 micrograms of iodine, above the adult recommended daily intake of 150. Do not take it alongside other iodine supplements, and do not exceed one capsule daily.
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, take it only on medical advice.
  • Contains phenylalanine and potassium.
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
  • If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
  • Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Edge Electrolytes

Ocean-sourced electrolyte powder, made in Queensland. You lose minerals through sweat, and magnesium in particular matters to how muscle contracts — low levels are one of the commonest causes of cramping. More on why.

Edge Athlete hydration powder, 105g unflavoured tub

Edge Athlete 105 g, 30 serves

$42.95 incl. GST

The higher-sodium formula, for hard training and hot days. 195 mg magnesium per serve, with added sodium and potassium. One serve is 3.5 g (two scoops) in 750 mL of water. Unflavoured, so it mixes into anything.

Ingredients: cOMx Complete Ocean Mineral Complex (concentrated ocean water), sea salt, potassium chloride, anti-caking agent (silicon dioxide).

Edge Ocean Trace hydration powder, 84g unflavoured tub

Edge Ocean Trace 84 g, 60 serves

$52.95 incl. GST

The everyday version. Same ocean mineral base with 165 mg magnesium per serve and less sodium — better suited to daily hydration than to heavy sweating.

Twice the serves of Athlete, and it works out cheaper per serve: about 88 cents against $1.43.

Ingredients: cOMx Complete Ocean Mineral Complex (concentrated ocean water).

Edge Electrolytes Double Lime hydration drink mix, 12 pack pouch

Flavoured sachets 12 pack, 192 g

$29.95 incl. GST

Single-serve sachets flavoured with real fruit — handy for a kit bag or the car. Double lime, blood orange & lime, and berry infusion, in regular and sugar-free.

Per serve: 16 g sachet giving 150 mg magnesium, 80 mg sodium, 70 mg potassium, plus a range of trace minerals. Vegan friendly, no colours, flavours or preservatives.

Ingredients: cane sugar, fruit juice powder, cOMx Complete Ocean Mineral Complex (concentrated ocean water), anti-caking agent (silicon dioxide). Sugar-free versions are sweetened with xylitol instead of cane sugar.

Which one, and being straight about the sodium

The magnesium content is good across the range and it is the reason I stock it. Athlete is the one with added sodium and potassium, so it is the pick if you are working hard in heat. Ocean Trace and the sachets are lower in sodium — the sachets run about 80 mg a serve, where dedicated sweat-replacement products run several hundred. If you are sweating heavily for hours, none of these will replace all the salt you lose on their own.

Important

  • Contains sodium and potassium. If you have been told to watch your salt intake, or you have a kidney or heart condition, check with your doctor first.
  • Sugar-free sachets contain xylitol, which can have a laxative effect in some people. Xylitol is toxic to dogs — keep it away from pets.
  • Not a sole source of nutrition. Use as part of a balanced diet.
  • Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Made in Southern Queensland, Australia by Edge Electrolytes.

Blossom's Organics Feel Good turmeric cinnamon chai, 120g jar

Blossom's Organics Feel Good Chai turmeric cinnamon, 120 g

$14.00 incl. GST

A turmeric and cinnamon chai blend, handmade in the Yarra Valley by Blossom's Organics. Caffeine free, so it suits an evening after training as well as a morning.

I stock it because people ask what to drink that isn't another coffee, and because warm spiced drinks are pleasant after a session. That is the whole of the claim.

To make it

Steep half a teaspoon per cup in hot water for a few minutes. Strain, and add a natural sweetener if you want one. Good with soy milk.

Important — read before using

  • If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before drinking this regularly. Turmeric and cinnamon can interact with anticoagulant medication.
  • Turmeric can aggravate gallstones and reflux in some people.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, keep to normal culinary amounts.
  • This is a food, not a medicine. It is not a treatment for anything and it is not a substitute for medication your doctor has prescribed.

Made in the Yarra Valley by Blossom's Organics Pty Ltd, Gladysdale, Victoria.

A note on what these are for

None of these products are claimable on private health insurance or Medicare, and neither is treatment at the clinic.

These products support recovery. They are not a treatment in themselves, and nothing here replaces seeing a doctor. If an injury is not settling, or you have numbness, loss of power in a limb, or a suspected fracture or rupture, that needs medical assessment rather than a cream.
