Injuries and conditions I treat

Muscle manipulation is soft tissue and musculoskeletal work. These are the problems people most often come in with.

Diagram of the lower leg showing the calf muscles running into the Achilles tendon and fixing to the heel, and how contracting the calf pulls the foot down
The calf draws the Achilles up, and that pulls the foot down. It takes more force than any other tendon.

Muscle manipulation can be applied to all the areas shown.

Other conditions people ask about

People come to me with the conditions below as well. I want to be straight about what I am claiming here. This therapy works on muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve and circulation. Where a condition has a muscular or nervous component, treatment may help with symptoms or with comfort. Some people have found it useful.

It is not a cure for any of these, it will not change the underlying disease, and it is not a substitute for the treatment your doctor has you on. If you come to me with one of these, keep seeing your doctor and keep taking your medication.

  • Asthma
  • Bed-wetting
  • Bell's palsy
  • Circulation problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Migraine and tension headache
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Prostate problems
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Sinus problems
  • Neck pain following a head injury

Happy to talk through whether treatment is likely to be worth your time before you book. If I don't think I can help, I will tell you.

Horses

Equine soft tissue work covers muscle soreness and spasm, pulled muscles, strains, bruising and over-reach injuries, with stretching and management advice for owners and trainers. More on horse muscle therapy.

When to see a doctor instead

Go to a doctor or hospital first, not to a therapist, if you have or suspect:

  • a fracture, or a piece of bone torn away with a tendon
  • a complete tendon rupture, or a dislocated joint
  • a head injury or concussion
  • numbness, pins and needles, or loss of power in an arm or leg
  • loss of bladder or bowel control together with back pain
  • chest pain, breathlessness, or an unexplained swollen and hot limb

Manual therapy has a role in recovery from many of these, but only after they have been medically assessed. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis.

Once you have been treated, what you do over the following weeks decides how fast it knits. Not sure whether your injury is something I can help with? Call 0438 106 861 and describe it, and I will tell you straight.
